RE-ENGINEERING:

A data warehouse is, well, a warehouse of organization data. Data warehouses are electronic repositories of raw and summarized historical data, often extracted from enterprise transactional databases. The optimum goal of data warehousing is to get all company data working together, so that users at different level can query, learn more and make the organization work better. Companies of every size are finding that data warehouses are essential for running their business.

A data warehouse takes organization data available in international databases, scrubs it up, organizes it, and puts it in a OLAP databases for viewing, printing, analyzing and decision making. The practice of data warehousing usually involves centralizing a variety of data sources or extending the value of a central repository so more can be done with the stored data, such as mining, transforming or analyzing it and depicting it visually in order to have practical access to critical data and decision support. This is a big deal when you consider the fact that companies have always had to go out and find the data each time they wanted to write a new decision support application.

Data warehouse store data in a format optimized for analysis and are frequently used in conjunction with query and reporting tools designed to perform some predefined queries and simple calculations. This level of analysis however is limited. For example query and reporting tools generally are not designed to perform time series analyses such as calculations of the weekly changes in the market share by region. Tools that can do those types of tasks often require users to understand the technical aspects of data storage and data structures. As a result the use of data query and reporting tools is often limited to highly train technical user.
